A Spectacular Display of Parol Lanterns in Historic Filipinotown

Historic Filipinotown Parol parade was bigger this 2016 with the participation of 2 high school marching bands .  More than 30 beautiful parols were showcased . Top prize was parol number 12 won by Marissa Pecson of Los Angeles. Her winning entry was chosen first place for its originality with the use of indigenous materials. Second place was the Kalayaan entry number 10 designed and made by Relson Banas. Third place winners were number 11 and number 2.

It was a spectacular display of handmade parol lanterns on the streets of Historic Filipinotown on the night of December 2, a reminiscence of the Christmas tradition in the Philippines. It was  a night to remember for all Filipino Americans that here in our own Filipinotown, Christmas is alive the Filipino way.

Miss Philippines USA organization launches Miss (PhilUSA) magazine in December 2016. The magazine aims to promote the beauty and lifestyle of the Filipino women in the US.  It also features successful individuals , events, fashion, health, businesses and sponsors of Miss Philippines USA pageant.

The magazine is by subscription and will soon be available in news stands at $4.95 US.  First issue cover girl is Chrystelle Volckmann, Miss Philippines USA 2015. Realtor/Model Karen Silva graces the cover of the second issue.

Coronation Night Hosted by Cher Calvin and Tony Cabrera 5th Year in a Row

The most prestigious  Filipino-American pageant celebrated its 5th successful13737588_1070214796393382_3598682615599421331_o coronation night on July 17 at the iconic Alex Theatre in Glendale, California. Indeed, an event filled with beautiful people, Miss Philippines USA pageant credits the two brilliant hosts who have been around since the inception.  Cher Calvin and Tony Cabrera were so magnetic and engaging and totally rocked the house with their powerful performance.

The special guest participation of former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz brought so much admiration mostly from notably affluent Fil-Ams.  Miss Diaz was warmly welcomed by the huge audience and still noticeably popular when she was introduced. Historically, our winners were

c13731451_1070214799726715_4638435198153561644_nrowned by a former Miss Universe and a famous actress in the Philippines.  Significant highlight of the pageant’s 5th year was the reunion of  past winners, Kristina Bryant, Jasmine Sabio,  Hannah Marte and Chrystelle Volckmann. Miss Bryant, the 2012 beauty who flew in from Miami took a time off from her busy schedule to meet and mentor the 2016 candidates.  She will also be the official pageant mentor of the upcoming 2017 pageant.

Filipinotown Celebrates Christmas with a Parol Lantern Parade


dsc_5481Los Angeles, Ca –    Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council or HiFinc  (a 501C3 corporation) and The Filipino Channel present the 9th annual Christmas Parol Lantern Parade in Historic Filipinotown . Spearheaded by Hifinc President Mrs. Cecilia Ramos, this holiday event will be held on December 2 at 5 pm and it starts and ends at 258 N. Union Avenue in Los Angeles.  This year’s Grand Marshalls are 3 highly respected dignitaries:  Consul General Adelio Cruz, LA City Council Member Mitch O’ Farrell and Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez.

Originated in the Philippines, the Parol lantern is a symbol of the victory of light over darkness and the Filipinos’ hope and goodwill during the Christmas season.  It is an ornamental, star shaped Christmas lantern and is traditionally made out of bamboo and colorful paper and comes in various sizes and shapes. “This idea of bringing this popular holiday décor called Parol to Filipinotown is a celebration of our Filipino Christmas tradition”, Cecilia Ramos says. The parol showcase will be paraded on the streets of Temple and Beverly in Historic Filipinotown.  “It brings the Fil-Am community together this holiday season and it is also a reminder that the Filipino Christmas spirit is alive here in Los Angeles, in our own Filipinotown”, she adds.  The public is encouraged to participate in the parol contest wherein a cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the most beautiful parol lantern. Judging criteria will be based on originality and creativity.

Filipinotown Celebrates 14th Anniversary


Historic Filipinotown celebrates its 14th year as the only proclaimed Filipinotown in the US by the City Council. The annual event is a gathering of Filipino-Americans all over the US in a festival showcasing the arts and the culture of the Philippines. It is also participated by businesses and non-profit organizations through display or exhibition of their products and services.

Activities include Filipiniana fashion show by Jo Berte, Kids fashion show, Laing and Bicol Express cook off,  Crown making for Kids hosted by Miss Philippines USA,  Recognition of Bicolanos in America for their contribution to our community,  Special performance of top Filipino artist Carol Banawa, Line dancing and many more.

Dinner at Shrimp Haus with Miss Universe Gloria Diaz

Santa Clarita, Ca – The Shrimp Haus Seafood Restaurant in Santa Clarita, Ca welcomed the first ever Filipina Miss Universe in a dinner reception held on the eve of the coronation of Miss Philippines USA 2016.  Candidates had a sumptuous buffet seafood dinner with Miss Diaz specially prepared by owners Levi and Francesca Llorico. The Shrimp Haus is famous for their seafood combo with original flavored sauce formulated by the owner himself.  They also serve Thai food in addition to their cajun fries , sweet corn and garlic bread.
